New EU Border System Triggers Long Delays at Brussels Airport

(MENAFN) Passengers at Brussels Airport faced severe delays on Monday as the rollout of the European Union’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) caused long queues at border control, according to airport officials.

Some non-EU travelers reportedly waited up to four hours at passport control, while departing passengers experienced delays of around one hour, said Jeffrey Franssens, a spokesperson for Brussels Airport, in remarks to a media outlet.

In contrast, EU citizens encountered much shorter processing times, typically ranging between 10 and 15 minutes, the airport said.

The disruptions have been linked to the introduction of the EU’s Entry/Exit System, a digital border management platform designed to register non-EU nationals entering and leaving the Schengen Area.

The system collects and stores biometric and personal data such as fingerprints, replacing the traditional practice of stamping passports.
