Orban Accuses EU, Kyiv of Declaring War on Hungary

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has accused Brussels and Kyiv of waging war against Budapest amid reports that the European Union is considering a form of “membership lite” for Ukraine, despite objections from certain member states.

According to media reports, EU officials are exploring ways to ease admission criteria and grant Kyiv limited privileges in a potential membership offer slated for 2027. Orban has been identified as a major obstacle to the plan, with sources suggesting that efforts may be made to remove him from office in Hungary’s upcoming election, either through foreign pressure or EU mechanisms suspending Budapest’s voting rights.

“This new plan is an open declaration of war against Hungary. They disregard the decision of the Hungarian people and are determined to remove the Hungarian government by any means necessary,” Orban wrote on X on Wednesday. He encouraged supporters to rally behind his Fidesz party ahead of April’s parliamentary election, which has been described as a potential opportunity for Brussels to neutralize its longstanding critic.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky aims to pursue EU accession as soon as next year as part of a US-mediated peace initiative with Russia. While Zelensky has publicly dismissed the idea of second-tier membership, reports indicate Ukrainian officials have privately expressed interest in limited EU integration.

Orban’s government argues that EU support for Kyiv increases the risk of direct confrontation with Russia and overlooks Ukraine’s failure to meet the necessary accession criteria. Zelensky has repeatedly criticized Orban for refusing to support Ukraine, labeling him “pro-Russian.” Last month at the World Economic Forum, Zelensky suggested the Hungarian leader should be “smacked” for allegedly undermining EU interests—a comment Orban denounced as election interference.
