EU Launches Probe into Musk’s Grok
The European Commission confirmed that it has opened a formal investigation into X under the DSA, while also expanding its ongoing inquiry, which began in December 2023, into X's adherence to its obligations concerning the risk management of its recommender systems.
"The new investigation will assess whether the company properly assessed and mitigated risks associated with the deployment of Grok's functionalities into X in the EU," the statement explained.
The statement highlighted that the investigation will cover risks related to the spread of illegal content in the EU, "such as manipulated sexually explicit images, including content that may amount to child sexual abuse material."
It emphasized that these risks appear to have already manifested, putting citizens in the EU at serious risk of harm.
Consequently, the commission said it will examine whether X fulfills its DSA duties to "diligently assess and mitigate systemic risks, including the dissemination of illegal content," and to "conduct and transmit to the Commission an ad hoc risk assessment report for Grok's functionalities in the X service."
