Trump Reaffirms U.S. Interest in Greenland
"We do need Greenland, absolutely," Trump stated in a phone interview with the magazine. The island, situated in the Arctic, remains part of Denmark.
Trump remarked that it was for others to interpret what the extensive U.S. strike against Venezuela signifies for Greenland.
"They are going to have to view it themselves. I really don't know," he said. "You know, I wasn't referring to Greenland at that time. But we do need Greenland, absolutely. We need it for defense."
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded on Sunday, declaring that the United States has no authority to annex Greenland. She urged Washington to cease issuing threats against a close ally and the Greenlandic population.
"I have to say it very directly to the United States," Frederiksen said in a statement. She firmly rejected the notion that the U.S. should assume control of Greenland, stressing that "the United States has no right to annex" any of the three territories within the Danish Realm — Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands.
Throughout the past year, Trump has repeatedly voiced the same demand for the United States to take over Greenland, sparking strong opposition from Greenland, Denmark, and the European Union.
The Trump administration has pointed to a mix of national security priorities, Arctic strategic interests, and the potential of vital minerals and natural resources as motivations behind its pursuit of control over Greenland.
